Behind the Lens - Things I have Learnt Weird and Wonderful
From brilliant blue skies to portraits in the rain, here's a few things I have learnt along my way being a commercial photographer...
- The sky is your silent Collaborator
Some mornings I wake to a moody grey blanket skies instead of beautiful clear skies. When a client
really needs their images, this can be a bit of a conundrum. Angles, an open mind and Photoshop are
my friends
- Tripods are Great
Free-hand photography is perfect when you're catching adhoc, casual images where every angle
is different by design. Lock your camera off when you need sharp consistent imagery at the same
angle.
- Rain - It's not so Bad
It certainly messes with schedules and hair! Between the showers, the light is soft and forgiving.
Relax and go with it - reflections and cropped shots can extend your creativity.
- Allow your Subjects to be Themselves
Give your subject a task or something to hold, talk to them and understand where they are in their
day. Usually subjects are nervous and a little friendly chit chat before you start shooting can absolutely
bring them into the present.
- Ladders are Your Friend
Elevation can change everything
- Unplanned Props
A paintbrush, an apple, a tape measure - Props are everywhere and can add context, scale and charm
- Snacks
A few snacks to keep everyone going between breaks and plenty of water keep people sparkling
- Perfection is a Moving Target
Shoots are a team sport. Align yourself with your crew. Clarity is key
- Variations
Shoot the extra frame or angle. Sometimes these become the unexpected hero shots
- Rule of Thumb
Bring more batteries and chargers than you think you need
